In ARM V7 RM, I saw "This chapter describes the implementation of the ARM Generic Timer as an OPTIONAL extension to an ARMv7-A or ARMv7-R processor implementation. So, I think it means that a SoC implementation can choice to involve the system timer or not.
I will divide the answer into two parts: 1. Accessing Virtual Timer registers: The guest OS will be accessing a Virtual timer. KVM will keep a copy of the Virtual Timer registers in VM context for each VM in the system. This (timer) context will be switching IN/OUT during VM switching.
The Generic Timer is an optional extension in ARMv7-A. It's present on the Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7, but not on the Cortex--A9 and Cortex-A5. The Cortex-A9/Cortex-A5 have something similar, which is the Global Timer.
